Coming of Age: American Art in Venice from 1850-1950
The show, which will be held from June 28 to October 12, 2008 at the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice, is inspired by the maturation and development of American art in the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, highlighting the development of American culture over a century.
The show goes from the provincial to the international, describing the literal transposition of detail up to the abstract interpretation of ideals. The developments of modernism and the physical and social changes over these years are important.
The show's curators include William Agee, Professor of Art History at Hunter College, New York, and Susan Faxon, Associate Director and Curator at the Addison Gallery. The latter has provided an overview of the works that illustrates an in-depth summary from the rise of modernism to the dramatic changes in the physical and social backdrop.
